Nvidia director Mark Stevens on competing for jobs after college
In an interview with FoxTalk editor Andy Green, Stevens said young people need to become “AI native and AI aware” and argued that students at smaller schools can still compete.
College students trying to land their first job may have another skill to add to the list: knowing how to work with AI.
Mark Stevens, a member of Nvidia’s board of directors, told me that young people entering the workforce need to understand how AI can help them do their jobs.
“I think a 20-year-old needs to be AI native and AI aware,” Stevens said in an Aug. 28 interview.
I asked Stevens what happens if AI takes over more of the junior work that young employees have traditionally used to gain experience and move up.
He said he does not think AI will necessarily replace many entry-level jobs.
“It will actually enhance the scope and the capability of those entry-level positions,” Stevens said.
Stevens and his wife, Mary, committed $200 million to an AI initiative at the University of Southern California. Asked what success would look like, he said part of the goal is to bring AI into programs across the university.
“We want every student at USC, undergraduate student, graduate student, to be AI equipped,” Stevens said.
That raised another question: what about students who do not attend a university with $200 million to put toward AI?
I asked Stevens what a student at a community college or smaller public university needs in order to compete.
“I think junior college students or students who are at smaller universities can still compete if they take a very sort of proactive and embrace AI and not be fearful of it,” Stevens said.
